1. Jim Crow Story-Lucy Craft Laney started the first school, to educate African American students who were not allowed to attend white schools. The schools started off very small, but the great demand for education by African American students made the school grow quickly. Miss. Laney went to the Presbyterian Church to ask for funding but none was avaliable.F.E.H Haines heard of her story and provided funding for her school. Many students recieved their education at her school and went on to collage.
2. Jackie Robinson is a great example of African Americans overcoming obstacles in society. Jackie was the first African American major league baseball player. There hadn’t been a black man playing openly in baseball since the 1880’s. He was determined to end segregation in major league baseball.

On May 17, 1954, in the Brown vs. Board of Education. the United States Supreme Court decided to bring an end to racial segregation in schools. The Supreme Court said that segregation is a violation to the 14th Amendment.
